Edgar Rene Cosigua Gesha W
Six years ago, Edgar, who works at San Jerónimo Miramar as the mill manager, planted a plot of Gesha at his family farm in Panimaquip on Volcan Atitlan in Guatemala. Originally from the CATIE institute collection in Costa Rica, this germplasm is a descendant of the 1964 FAO mission to Ethiopia.
Most years, Edgar would reserve what it produced for his family's consumption—keeping their best coffee for themselves to enjoy. This year, they had a larger harvest—and wanted to find a good home for it.
B Sides bought everything that was available.
Producer Bio
"I would say he is one of the top coffee professionals in the world," is how Giorgio from Finca San Jerónimo Miramar introduced me to Edgar Rene Cosigua. Edgar has been in coffee since he reached working age—first with his family, and then with Finca San Jerónimo Miramar. There, he's done everything from fieldwork to helping in the nursery, planting and pruning, assisting in the soil fertility program, monitoring disease and then, finally, working at the mills—both wet and dry. Today, he's FSJM's mill manager, cupping every lot produced by the farm and managing data collection from drying times to green coffee yield reports for more than 10 consecutive harvests.
